Goin’ to the Zoo!

Nathan LOVES going to the zoo and he often suggests that we go.  Since the zoo is a block away from where my younger children attend school we can just “decide” to stop in on the animals right after they open in the morning before we go back home if we don’t have anything pressing going on that day.  It’s nice to be able to do that.  Autumn, when the air turns cooler and the kids are all back in school , brings some really quiet mornings at the zoo and Nathan can just run without getting lost.  Sometimes I follow him and sometimes we each take turns picking something to go see.  Sometimes we pack a lunch or on a spur of the moment trip we go back home when we get hungry.  On this particular day when I had the camera with me we were on a quest to find a blue bird.

September… never too early to start putting up those Christmas lights.  Nathan thinks they look really pretty on this overcast day as we tiptoed through the jungle on our way to find some elephants.

We felt like we were on Safari in the jungle spying on the elephants.  We saw four altogether and we watched one get a drink of water from a pool right in front of us.  We took notice of where elephants are from on their information/map and Nathan took the opportunity to sing the continent song.  After that there was much singing as we went through the zoo identifying which continent the animals originated from.

After a visit to the giraffes we found some PINK birds.  Look at the skinny legs of the flamingo.

A favorite lookout spot at the fountain.  Look how many ducks there are!

This bird has some blue on him and Nathan enjoyed chasing  him around a little bit.  Then we went into the bird house to continue our search.

There were many strange looking birds camouflaged in this first room.  A few rooms later we did find a really neat blue bird but with the lighting my picture did not turn out well.

These penguins looked to be as big as Nathan.

This one made us giggle when we watched him do a belly flop into the water.  He delighted Nathan as he gave him a front row seat to his show.

We found ourselves running out of time and needing to go and pick kids up from school.  Nathan couldn’t resist climbing on these sculptures as we passed by them on our way out of the park.

If we didn’t get to stop and visit the real thing on this trip we made sure to stop and see them on our trip to the zoo the next week, another grey and drizzly day.  And if I didn’t mention it, those days are PERFECT for the zoo!
