As I put it to my kids, Labor Day is a day for “laboring” and getting something done. I remember growing up it was a day to accomplish some heavy household project like moving refrigerators out the front door and around through the side door and vice versa one year so the two we had could switch locations. But it’s also a day for fun, I admit. Really a three day weekend should always have some element of fun. For the past few years we have spent part of the day canning on Labor Day. But this year our usual trip to Coney Island for a picnic and rides was skipped due to the on and off nature of our rainy weekend; the first rain we’d had in months. ROASTING MARSHMALLOWS!!!
Not just marshmallows but we had all the fixings for S’mores and the kids thought this was a fantastic and fun idea. Plus one of us could still be manning the canning station in the kitchen.
Nathan had already had a bath out of necessity so letting him run around outside with sticky marshmallows in the wet grass… well, we knew we’d probably be changing him into a fresh pair of pajamas again.
Everyone likes roasting a marshmallow.
