Once a year in the summertime when it’s soooo HOT no one feels like moving or eating, we decide to jazz the “dog days” of summer up a little bit by having ice cream for dinner, aka “ice cream night”! It’s an option just once that we use when we suspect it might be the hottest day of the whole year. Several families we know love this idea so much that they do it now too. About any parent can live with “once per year”. Last Saturday was yet another “heat emergency” for us so we got out the ice cream.
We got four flavors of ice cream, with whipped cream, blackberries, sprinkles, chocolate and homemade hot fudge to choose from. Once you make hot fudge, you’ll never want to go back to store bought.
The kids put whatever they wanted into their bowls. Some went back for seconds. Lindsay says the only downside to ice cream night is that she’s not really hungry… which is why we have ice cream in the first place!

Even 2 of our cats came outside to join us.
One rule (besides only once a year) about ice cream night is that you have to make it an outdoor occasion so you get to fully experience the heat of the season. Ice cream turns to soup pretty quick when it’s 96 degrees with a heat index over 105.
Clean up and cool down happen all at once and the kids had a blast.
A game of softball included the ball being pitched through the sprinkler and then the batter running to 3 bases at various landmarks in the yard.
Kaitlyn had fun in the sandbox, as well.
While some of the children “air dried” before coming in, Kaitlyn hosed off the sand just so she could get inside to the bathtub to clean up for Sunday.
We love our ice cream night tradition!
Yum! We like this idea. Isaac saw this and was a little sad we missed this dinner!
