Once upon a time, Kaitlyn’s Auntie Rachael and Uncle Isaac threw a surprise birthday party for her just a week before she turned one, at their apartment while we were in Rochester for a holiday visit.

Right before New Year’s there was a party with a cake and presents and family and everything! It was such a fun surprise. One of the things that Kaitlyn got was a fuzzy pink GAP sweatshirt from her Grammy. It was fuzzy and comfy and had sparkly silver thread and a tiny heart on the hood. Kaitlyn loved it and wore it everywhere every chance she got. We just had to roll up the sleeves a little bit so this baby girl could find her hands.
Kaitlyn put it away hanging it up in her closet for the hot Cincinnati summertime weather. When a chill hit the air that autumn it was a good time to wear the sweatshirt to the pumpkin patch in October of 2008. It is a size two and so it was still a little big on this 21 month old little girl but we no longer had to roll up the sleeves all the time.
But by October of 2012 Kaitlyn at over 5 1/2 years old was still wearing this favorite sweatshirt to the pumpkin patch and everywhere in between. It even had her name markered in the label so in case it got lost at school it could be returned to her. I figured that after the fall I would sneak it away from her and pack it away. But she just loved this sweatshirt so much it was going to be hard. I figured this was certainly one of those gifts that we’d gotten our money’s worth from. I think my Mom saw a picture of Kaitlyn wearing this that I posted. Could Kaitlyn still be wearing the same little sweatshirt???
So Kaitlyn’s Grammy went shopping for a replacement and two days later Kaitlyn had a package in the mail to open right away. It wasn’t even her birthday or Christmas!!! Kaitlyn got big eyes and a huge smile when she opened it and saw the new pink sweatshirt. It was very similar. The inside is fuzzier while the outside isn’t as fuzzy and it has fur trim around the hood which was very different but no tiny heart on the hood. When you have a sweatshirt for all of the lifetime you can remember you get to know a sweatshirt pretty well. When Kaitlyn held it up against herself she didn’t look so happy and when I asked her about it she replied that it was too big for her to wear right now. I smiled and told her that she’d grown… quite a bit… and this was actually her size now. I even showed her the 6-7 on the label and reminded her that she is nearly 6 years old. So she put it on and was nothing short of amazed!!! “Oh! It DOES fit!” And its little counterpart is retired now, not quite as sadly as it would have been otherwise.
