What happens in December in the life of a musician??? Performances! Constantly! Everyone wants to be entertained! I have 3 kids in 5 performing groups and a husband in at least that many. And then there’s church! So where does that leave me? Fifth performance of the week and single parenting again. I managed to feed everyone dinner, managed to give one child a nap on the ride, managed to get a kid changed for the show from his running outfit into holiday concert dress from head to toe while buckled in a seatbelt driving, managed to show up only 10 minutes after call time, managed to find an extra bridge during call time when the one I JUST had replaced a few weeks ago was found broken in pieces due to an “accident” with it earlier in the day, managed to scare off the grandparents, managed to take a few one handed pictures, managed to save someone’s taping video camera from my 2 year old in the middle of the performance, managed to keep track of four kids, managed to find the fifth one fairly quickly after a “disappearing into thin air” act inside of a locker in the boys locker room during a frantic search as the concert was ending and people were getting up to leave, managed a brief conversation with the music teacher out in the hallway on the way out and finally I managed to get all of them home and through the bathroom before any serious meltdowns or more losses occurred. Phew! Is this it for the week? Not on your life. Friday… Saturday… Sunday… more performances to come PLUS a 5K to attend in freezing weather w/ my 2 youngest in tow.
Tristan is in his 4th year of playing cello but tonight was his first performance with the school orchestra for the school’s holiday concert. He did really well and it was so much fun to hear him play with the group and see him keep up. They played “Hannukah”, “Eine Kleine Nacht Music”, “Nut Cracker March”, “Christmas Celebration” and “We Wish You A Merry Christmas”. Instead of wearing all black, as the usual dress code calls for, Tristan got to wear a festive red shirt which I found last week for a couple of dollars at the second hand and the kids all donned Santa hats which we were able to pull out of our stash at home. The kids looked really cute all dressed up.
Tristan will play this concert again twice next week on the last day of school for half of the classes at a time… hopefully we’ll have our needed repairs done by then. He did a great job, sounded so good, looked good and I’m glad that he is progressing with all of his practice while enjoying it at the same time.
