Some chores are harder than others but typically “Recycling” isn’t one of them. In fact, it’s one of the first chores I give my children when they turn 2 years of age. But this week taking out the recycling to the bins by the garage proved to be impossible if not lethal after the snow and ice we had from the storm Monday night and Tuesday.
Hurray! After three days we could clear it out and finally safely make our way to the recycling bins without breaking our necks. Usually our family fills to overflowing 2 recycling bins each week which we have now traded for a great big huge recycling dumpster. I like to think of our family as environmentally responsible as we recycle metal, cardboard, glass, paper, and of course plastic and also combine trips, pack lunches in reusable containers, keep the heat low, do laundry in the middle of the night (not sure how that one works but that’s what you are “supposed” to do in a smoggy city) walk/ride bikes to the store in good weather for the usual “milk run”, avoid disposable products for most uses, use canvas bags at the store, etc. Yes! We try to be earth friendly. So you can imagine that we were relieved when Kaitlyn and her helper finally made their way out again on Thursday afternoon taking three trips to recycle what was quickly stacking up.
My understanding is that since the most amount of energy is used during the middle of the day (due to businesses, schools, etc) it creates less of a strain on the system if the loads are more balanced during the day. I think there is less energy loss systematically if the energy usage trends are more constant with fewer spikes.
