It was a brisk 9 degrees at 8:00 this morning.
At 8:30 a.m. the workmen arrived and removed the last five of my 70 year old windows from my home.
I gave the furnace a break. It only got down to 59 in the house before the windows were in place and I turned the furnace back on. The cats went berserk with all the banging and the kids and I left for a little while.
My old windows weren’t in very good condition anymore, as you can see. Since 2006 we have been replacing windows a few at a time. The back windows were replaced first since there were no storm windows left on them.
In 2007 we replaced the upstairs windows as panes of glass were actually falling out of them and it was November. Replacing or repairing became a forced issue.
In 2008 we bought a new van…
At the end of 2009 we had the lower front and sides measured and FINALLY in 2010 they are in and the house is completely outfitted. Yes, I pay extra for the “panes” to be put in. It’s part of the home’s personality.
By 12:30 they were done. There is a HUGE difference tonight inside the house with these new windows. They are wonderful and very easy to care for and keep clean. Happily these are finished 2 months before the Lead Abatement goes into effect which will more than double the cost of this job…LUCKY! There would be no reasonable way for us to get this work done until the children were older and we would have the option to opt out of it. A penalty fine of $30,000 per window will be applied to any job caught not following this new program.

New windows are so nice and those are beautiful! We both agree with you, it is worth it to pay more for the panes, it looks silly without them, especially in older houses. We looked at one 20's house this past weekend and found that they added some really cheap "panes" on the inside of the glass in the upstairs windows and we both said "Heather is smart".

My next door neighbor put in windows without the panes. It took me a loooong time to get used to that, it changed the look of the house so much. I decided then and there that if we ever did windows, my house could not trade in it's personality over a few dollars.
ReplyDeleteFor the record, I've seen cheap panes and would rather have ancient drafty windows than those.
