There is no time to rest between celebrations in our home since we have several double holidays that we celebrate through the year. No exception here! Rick’s birthday was the day after Christmas and we always make sure to have a separate celebration for the occasion. It’s hard to party too much, right?
We presented Dad with his gifts here… some new clothes for work and a game…
… a beautifully illustrated hymn book, which of anyone, he should have. And a couple of gift cards with the promise of a lunch date including ice cream afterwards and a coupon for a free babysitter. Nathan gave Rick the gift of words when sitting at the table for cake he loudly said “More Milk Please” which sounded like “Mo Mik Peas”. “Did you hear that”, we all asked? Clear as a bell!
I take requests on birthdays. This is Rick’s very most favorite cake in the whole wide world and he requests it every year. It is a chocolate raspberry truffle and is so dense you only need a thin slice. It has 1 1/2 tsp. of flour in the whole thing and the raspberries were picked by us personally for the sauce.
After the serenade he made a wish… and all the candles went out.
If you like chocolate then this dessert is for you. This cake is reminiscent of the slices of “chocolate oblivion” which was served at a fancy little dessert shop called “Crème de’ la’ Crème” on Alexander St. in Rochester and we frequented there whenever occasion would allow including right after picking up our engagement ring. Rick loved this place in college and so did everyone else I knew. After they went out of business my Mom went on the search for their recipe and found one that is pretty darn close (Thank you). It is pictured here served with freshly whipped chantilly cream and homemade raspberry sauce on a fancy little German dessert plate I picked up as a set at an antique shop somewhere in rural eastern New York near Albany on one of my Aunt’s business trips that I went with her on. Rick claims this cake to be “his”. I still ask him every year what he would like me to make for him but each year, this is the answer… a good answer!
