I think brown paper packages have to rank among everyone’s favorite things; but this seems especially so for children. So when one from New York turned up on our front porch yesterday, news spread through the household with excitement even spilling over to the young visitor we had over. But the little guy it was for was napping at the time and the young lady it was for won’t be home until Saturday. So appropriate to their back-to-back birthdays I let Nathan attack the box first this morning before going to playgroup and Lindsay will wait until tomorrow when she finally gets home. Nathan knows about presents now and was pretty excited.
After getting a little help from Mom with scissors to open the box Nathan didn’t wait. He seemed to know that the blue package was for him and tore into it in an instant. His big brother was happy with the bubble wrap.
Wow! Bathtub toys… a big colorful boat with lots of interesting stuff; nesting/stacking cups and a fishing pole with fish and a captain and a jelly fish comb and a scrubby fish and a life preserver and a paddle that turns and… FUN! Nathan liked his puppy birthday card too. “Puppy” he said in his most delighted tone.
Upon opening this package Nathan instantly had two volunteers to help him take his next bath. Then we cleaned up all the papers, brought the boat to its new docking location and stepped outdoors to spray on the sunscreen as we headed out into the heat and smog for a morning of friends at the playground.
Upon our return home and a good lunch of leftover pasta with vegies, focaccia and a spinach salad I told the kids it was a great time for a bath to get all the sand, sweat and sunscreen off before quiet time. Just as I was getting the “look” from Kaitlyn I added that Nathan had a new boat to take with him and try out in the tub. Then there were great cheers and hoorays and racing to see who could be first with their teeth brushed and their clothes in the basket.
It was the best bath time EVER! Nathan loves his “boat”. And when the kids were unwillingly finished finally because it was getting so late they put all those toys inside of the boat where they store very neatly. Thank you and Happy Birthday, again, to Nathan!
