Highland Park

If I walk a block up the hill from my parents house right past the gates of the B&B I arrive in a huge wooded park that I have many fond memories of.  It’s a wonderful place to bring my children to now.

At the very top of the hill is one of the city’s reservoirs which Tristan and Lindsay took a closer look at.  Then we moved on taking the meandering trails up and down the hills through the park.  The kids enjoyed running free on the grassy hills.  Nathan escaped the confines of the stroller and a tired (from staying up too late) Kaitlyn found refuge in the stroller… a fair and happy trade.

There are thousands of blooming lilac bushes in the park during the month of May but there are plenty of gigantic old trees to climb in and play hide & seek around any time of the year.

This particular tree was a favorite of mine as a teenager to come up to and visit with my friends.  A group of us would walk up after church (right next to the park) and swing in this tree’s branches for hours just to talk and visit.  I asked Rick if he’d like to have this tree in our back yard.  We’re both pretty sure that this tree is larger than our entire lot.  It is a wonderful old tree.

We spent hours and hours in the park on this morning leaving only because it was lunch-time.  As a side note, I’m not sure how Tristan’s hat stayed on through his upside down antics.

Nathan found bouncing on the tree’s lowest boughs to be quite enjoyable.  Then we found a new playground on the other side of the reservoir to play on.

We stopped on the trail to climb what we’ve coined the “Moon Rock” since childhood.  Look carefully.  All 5 children do appear in the first picture, with Kaitlyn in the background.

We found some gigantic magnolia trees throughout the park in various stages of blooming.  The blooms were the size of medium sized pine cones.  The trees themselves were as big as any maple tree and one was even bigger towering with the oaks.

Just before crossing the road continuing through the park and down the hill home again, we came to the old “secret garden”.  One of the huge old trees in the garden had been cut down to a stump with a tunnel carved through the middle of it.     My boys, in particular, loved going through it.  We had a wonderful morning in the park.
